Brotherhood: The Crux of Phi Delta Theta
The brotherhood present in the Cal Delt chapter of Phi Delta Theta is unparalleled, mostly as a result of the numerous brotherhood events planned every semester. One of the easiest ways to build the brotherhood felt between each member of Phi Delta Theta is to spend time together participating in a variety of activities to create shared experiences. As such, the brotherhood committee dedicates hours of time and effort to plan and execute brotherhood events each week.
Probably our most memorable new event from the past school year was our bus trip to the USC-ASU game in Phoenix. The chance to travel into enemy territory with your brothers by your side and cheer for the Trojans all while having each other’s backs when rival fans would try to start trouble created instant memories. Some had been looking forward to the trip for the entire week leading into it. For others, the trip became a reality only when the more zealous brothers dragged them out of bed and onto the bus. However, regardless of how each brother found himself in the sun-devil’s den showing intense school spirit, each had a time worth writing home about, and the brotherhood flourished.
Another event from the past that stands out was a trip out to the ocean for a day of deep-sea fishing. Relaxing with your brothers while enjoying a beautiful day of fishing and good conversation is paradise, and each person there knew they were lucky to have such great company to fish with. Every person there had a chance to get to know their brothers on a much deeper level, as that is simply the nature of a day out fishing. Despite the early morning awakening and occasional bout of seasickness, the overall consensus was extremely positive.
Two other examples of brotherhood-building activities are much simpler than the first two: BBQ days and beach volleyball days. Both of these have become tradition at our chapter of Phi Delt, and help to keep the brotherhood alive on a regular basis. Coming together to grill and enjoy the company of fellow brothers during a lazy afternoon is really at the core of what Phi Delt brotherhood tries to be. Trips to the beach for some volleyball action began organically and have been a semi-consistent tradition ever since. They are all about coming together to enjoy friendly competition on the beach and build brotherhood through the power of sport, another staple of fraternities everywhere, but Phi Delt in particular.
